Is Humility useless?
.
Obviously the title of this article is deliberately provocative. But I don’t think this question is to be discarded so easily either. It is a provocation that arose from too many statements by various musicians who praise humility as a fundamental characteristic of a successful musician.
Let’s now try to contextualize my instigation.
.
The courage of making music
.
Releasing a song is not a foregone decision. It’s a creative act that partially represents oneself, and for this reason it is very personal. Publishing music – but this is true for any other art – is therefore like making a part of oneself available to everyone, thus exposing it to criticism and misunderstanding.
But more and more music is released every day.
Why?
You don’t write for yourself
.
Whoever produces music aims to be heard by other peoples. No musician writes for themself.
It’s an act of courage mainly linked to one fact: all musicians are convinced of the quality of their art and that it can please those who will listen to it (only in a few cases the goal is exclusively linked to the creation of a scandal or a trend, deliberately neglecting the final quality of the product itself).
If this were not the case, no one would publish, too afraid of the judgment of others.
This leads to a first conclusion:
every musician is convinced that their art can potentially be successful.
Is Humility useless?
.
So let’s go back to the title of the article.
Is Humility really useless?
In my opinion it is not a fundamental characteristic for a musician, and more generally for an artist. On the other hand, it’s fundamental to have presumption, and, why not, a little arrogance, aspects that are not by chance extremely emphasized in many biographies and in genres such as rap.
This does not mean that a musician should not have reference points in other artists that they admire and who can be of inspiration. However, this is not about humility, but rather a mix of emotions and a personal analysis of the artistic value that leads to recognizing and appreciating the skills of others.
It is not humility that gives an artist the strength to make a part of himself public, but the belief, and presumption, that he can be appreciated by an audience of listeners made of strangers.
In conclusion, I think it is important to make a clarification.
Humility, in the right doses, is an extremely positive characteristic in a person. What I simply wanted to explain in this post is that it is not a fundamental element to succeed in the music industry, but it is still an important personal quality, something able to enrich and improve a person’s approach to life.
